American Folk Music. Experience through authentic folk songs the powerful life and enduring spirit of American history. A continuous 90+ minute multimedia Overture traces the history of American folk music, from English ballads to field hollers to gospel songs and the blues. Learn how American folk music has evolved and given rise to other popular styles of music, such as ragtime, jazz, rhythm and blues, bluegrass, country and western, and rock 'n' roll.
Contents include 54 piano rags and nine ragtime songs. These are deployed through five major sections and feature performers themselves talking to camera, much use of old music sheets, newspaper articles, elderly and rare recordings of original artists, contemporary photographs and movie clips. Introducing all these items, and guiding you through a fairly complex menu is the ragtime fanatic Robert Winter. Topics of the period but unrelated to music are also found. Anything from politics to the early flight of the Wright brothers is included guaranteeing a broader appeal for this program.
