Araujia sericofera. This is an interesting and ornamental, vigorous evergreen climber bearing racemes of white, delicately scented, salver-shaped flowers that are followed by large, pear-shaped pods which eventually burst to reveal a mass of silky, gossamer threads. It is called the Cruel Plant for its nasty habit of grabbing unwary moths by the proboscis whilst on their nocturnal nectar visits. The plant is emphatically not, however, insectivorous, and – happy ending – the moth is usually released the following morning. |
