This doorway comes from Hertford House in Manchester Square, London. This large house contains an important collection of art, assembled by the Wallace family. Within the beautiful rooms are displayed French paintings, furniture, wood carvings and medieval armour. This elegant doorway is from the courtyard of the house and uses silk to create a screen between the outside and inside of the building. The lead urns stand forward of the door, the eye guided through the silk to daylight beyond. This bookend is made using British gypsum plaster which allows highly exquisite detail. Additional detail is made using thin metal leaf. Dimensions: W 16.5cm (6.5") H 21.5cm (8.5") D 9cm (3.5").
