Coeliac disease is an adverse reaction to gluten, the main protein in wheat and related grains rye, barley and oats.The disease runs in families and can begin at any age, even if the person has previously eaten gluten without problem. In addition, some sort of trigger such as a bad accident, a viral infection or even pregnancy may set it off.
People with Dermatitis Herpetiformis, which shows as itchy blisters mainly on the back of the elbows and forearms, the buttocks and the front of the knees also have a very mild form of coeliac disease and a gluten-free diet is prescribed as treatment.
